Pony Club is one of the leading junior equestrian organizations in the world, represented throuhg
out 30 countries. The United States has over 600 individual clubs spread throughout 48 states and
the Virgin Islands, with more than 12,000 members.
The Pony Club "idea" originated in Great Britain in 1928. It came to the United States in 1954. The
founders were enthusiastic fox hunters who recognized the need for an organization that provided
sound instruction for interested youngsters, especially those who could not afford expensive lessons.
The purpose of the Pony Club is to encourage young people to ride and to learn to enjoy all kinds of
sports connected with horses and riding; to provide instruction in riding and horsemanship, and to
instill into members the proper care of their animal; to promote the highest ideals of sportsmanship,
citizenship and loyalty, thereby cultivating strength of character and self-discipline.
Pony Club Pledge
"As a member of the united States Pony Club, I stand for the best in sportsmanship as well as in horsemanship. I shall compete for the enjoyment of the game well played and take winning or losing in stride, remembering that without good manners and good temper, sport loses its cause for being. I shall endeavor to maintain the best tradition of the ancient and noble skill of horsemanship, always treating my horse with consideration due a partner."

Each local pony club is run by volunteers, including a District Commissioner and other elected officers.
Clubs involve entire families. Pony Club members range from 5-21. The maximum age is absolute: On
December 31 following a pony Clubber's 21st birthday , he or she becomes a graduate. Often those
graduates become volunteers whose knowledge enables them to provide sound instruction for the next
generation of pony clubbers.
Parents play an important role in Pony Club. Without the time and effort of the parents we would have no
local pony clubs. They are the most significant volunteers and help with meetings, regional events, and
fund-raising. This does not mean the parents must know about horses! There are plenty of things
non-horsey parents can do to help out.
Pony Club is not a Drop-Off organization! Getting involved in your child's pony club can be just as
rewarding for the parent as it is for the child.
